In memoriam: Richard “Dick” Brickley, 1928-2012

Trumpeter, music educator, and school administrator Richard “Dick” Brickley, 83, passed away on September 24, 2012.

 

Brickley grew up in Iowa, and as a high school student performed trumpet solos throughout the eastern part of the state. In 1946 he won the Chicagoland Music Festival trumpet competition. Most recently, he performed with the Dixie Notes Big Band.

At the beginning of his career, Brickley held band director positions in Marion, Monticello, Anamosa and Vinton, and served in Korea with the United States Air Force. From 1968 to 1976, he was the director of bands at Washington High School in Cedar Rapids. During this tenure, he implemented many different musical organizations and activities at the school, including the “Jazz Rock Jamboree” regional jazz band contest, and took a brass choir with vocal choir and later the band to Europe.

Brickley left Iowa for fifteen years and served as a supervisor of Fine Arts in Grand Junction, Colorado, and as supervisor and principal in Longmont, Colorado. He served as a music adjudicator and band clinician in Iowa and Colorado, and was an appointed member of the Music Advisory Board for the University of Colorado.
