Ellsworth Smith Competition Announcement

The ITG Executive Committee and Board of Directors announce that the 2021 Ellsworth Smith International Trumpet Solo Competition will now be held in Dublin, Ireland, in partnership with the Royal Irish Academy of Music during the week of September 22 – 25, 2021.

Originally scheduled to be hosted at Brigham Young University (USA) during the same week, the competition is being moved due to the current US travel ban that prevents European and Brazilian citizens from entering the United States. Two of the three jury members and seven of the eight finalists are from Europe or Brazil. It simply is not possible to host this event in the United States at this time.

David Collins (trumpet professor at RIAM) will now co-host the event with Jason Bergman.

All participants have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19, and strict health protocols will be in place during the competition to ensure a safe experience for all involved. The hotel and performance venue are in close proximity, and we are confident that the competition can move forward in a safe and successful manner.

We will continue to monitor the COVID-19 pandemic in Ireland, Europe, Brazil, and the United States as we approach the competition. If the current circumstances relating to the pandemic deteriorate, we may be forced to postpone the competition again until September 2022, where it will return to BYU. Our hope and expectation is that we will avoid that scenario.

We look forward to sharing the live-streamed performances of each round, as well as photos and a full report of the competition. We are also pleased to bring a major ITG event to Europe and thank all who have made this possible.
