Gateway Brass visits Lamar State University

On Tuesday, January 22, Lamar University hosted the Gateway Brass, a chamber ensemble from The United States Air Force Band of the West, on campus for an evening recital of brass and percussion music.

The musical selections contained much variety for the audience to enjoy. The concert opened with the spirited Liberty Fanfare by John Williams arranged by TSgt Shane Stanke. Two works on the program were composed by Gateway Brass's A1C Daniel Thrower. The ensemble also performed Eric Ewazen's Colchester Fantasy, Enrique Crespo's Suite Americana No. 1, and Henry Fillmore's Rolling Thunder, among several others.  While many brass quintets choose to include a drum set primarily for jazz and marches, the Gateway Brass employed orchestral percussion performed by MSgt James Bartelt, who created his own arrangements to the repertoire.
