Timofei Dokshizer Anniversary of 90th Birthday

In December of 2011, a number of events took place across the Moscow region of Russia and in Vilnius, Lithuania to honor the life and career of 20th century’s renowned artist and educator, Timofei Dokshizer. The following is an excerpt taken from a forward written by one of Dokshizer’s students, professor of trumpet at the Gnesins Russian Academy of Music, Vyacheslav Prokopov.

“Late last Fall, the musicians’ community of Russia widely marked what would have been the 90th Birthday of a distinguished artist of the 20th century, Timofei Dokshizer. Although his birthday is on December 13th, the anniversary events began in November and lasted through the end of December. Timofei Dokshizer would often say, “I’m a musician, and my purpose on Earth is to bring people happiness.” He enjoyed a long and fulfilling career, and a happy life. His technique was an evolution for the trumpet, and to the brass world, he was an innovator. Trumpet used to be a second tier orchestra instrument, but with his playing, Timofei Dokshizer showed that a trumpet can sing as singers do and play as a violin or a piano. He was able to bring the trumpet to such new heights that it now stood in line with all solo instruments.”

Meanwhile, in Vilnius, Lithuania, Maestro Saulus Sondeckis organized a three-day concert series to honor his long time friend and colleague. Performances featured young talented trumpeters performing with various renowned orchestras of Lithuania, and all three days included unforgettable appearances by Sergei Nakariakov. Throughout the series of performances Dokshizer’s Benge trumpet was displayed, which has its permanent exhibition at The Museum of Theatre, Music and Cinema in Vilnius,

The first event took place on November 29th at the Central House of Artists in Moscow. Coincidently, this was the place where in 1961 Timofei Dokshizer founded a Trumpet Society which is known today as the “The Association of Brass Players.” This society is still very relevant in the affairs of brass players. There are frequent concerts and social events held at the society, which are attended by the brass players’ community of Moscow.

The anniversary concerts continued into December and included evenings at the Gnesins Russian

Academy of Music and the House of Arts and Sciences. Both concerts featured the Bolshoi Orchestra’s Soloist and winner of numerous International competitions, Evgeniy Gurev among the distinguished performers. The latter concert featured jazz trumpet sensation, Vadim Eilenkrig. Concerts also took place at the Timofei Dokshizer Children’s School of Music, featuring top students from the class of Vyacheslav Prokopov and Vladimir Dokshizer. On December 24th, The Bolshoi Theater held a performance of the “The Nutcracker” to commemorate the anniversary.
