ECU appoints DiMartino, features with ensembles

Gabriel DiMartino was recently appointed Assistant Professor of Trumpet at East Carolina University, and is featured as a soloist with all of their major ensembles this first year.

Most recently, DiMartino performed Allen Vizzutti’s “Snowscenes" with the East Carolina University Orchestra under the direction of Dr. Jorge Richter at the Friends of the School of Music Gala event, January 28, 2017.

This piece was chosen for the school’s annual donor gala because the winter theme of the piece fit the winter theme of the gala. The Friends of the School of Music Gala is a showcase featuring student ensembles of all kinds, including the jazz band, choirs, opera program, and wind ensemble as well as the orchestra. Presented as a “prism” concert, the audience, seated at dinner tables and served, is surrounded by stages. Chris Ulffers, director of the school of music, M.C.’s the event and introduces each ensemble. The event is designed to demonstrate the effect and efficacy of donating to the school with a fun concert that includes something for everyone.

DiMartino writes, " I heard my dad Vince practicing this piece when I was growing up, and listened to the recording of Allen doing it (Emerald Concerto and Other Gems) nonstop when I was a teenager, so I have been excited to play this piece for decades!  I first performed it with the Syracuse University Summer Festival Orchestra a few years ago, and barely got through it!"

The performance was graciously filmed by staff at the gala at Gabriel’s request. The performance can be viewed on YouTube at: https://youtu.be/DVRRZWOTqhM
