Kris Johnson to University of Michigan

Kris Johnson has been appointed faculty at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theater, and Dance as an Assistant Professor of Jazz Trumpet this fall 2024.

Jason Dovel to University of Kentucky

Jason Dovel has been appointed assistant professor of trumpet at the University of Kentucky (UK) School of Music. Prior to his appointment at UK, he was associate professor of trumpet at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, where he established a large, comprehensive trumpet program that included the NSU Trumpet Festival, NSU Baroque Trumpet Ensemble, NSU Brass Day, and the NSU Faculty Brass Quintet. He has also taught at the University of North Texas and North Central Texas College.

He is active as a soloist and clinician throughout the United States, with recent appearances in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia. In the 2012–13 school year, he performed at the Exploring Trumpet in Greece International Festival (Kalavrita, Greece), Midwest Trumpet Festival (Pittsburg, Kansas), Wartburg Trumpet Festival (Waverly, Iowa), Midwest Clinic (Chicago), and the International Trumpet Guild Conference (Grand Rapids, Michigan).

As an orchestral trumpeter, he has performed with the Tulsa Symphony Orchestra, Tulsa Ballet, Tulsa Opera, Arkansas Philharmonic, Dallas Opera, Toledo Opera, and Symphony of Northwest Arkansas. During the summer months, he is principal trumpet of Ash Lawn Opera (Virginia) and has also spent summers performing at the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp (Michigan), Crested Butte Music Festival (Colorado), Heritage Theatre Festival (Virginia), OK Mozart Festival (Oklahoma), Bowling Green Summer Music Institute (Ohio), and the North Texas Conductors' Collegium. Dovel has published articles in the Music Educators Journal,International Trumpet Guild Journal, The Instrumentalist and has been a recordings reviewer for the International Trumpet Guild Journal since 2006. He is the Employment Editor for the International Trumpet Guild and has also composed and arranged a number of works for brass chamber groups. He has recorded numerous discs with the North Texas Wind Symphony (GIA WindWorks), Lone Star Wind Orchestra (Naxos  Records), and the Bowling Green Philharmonia (Albany Records). Jason Dovel has studied privately with Keith Johnson, George Novak, Charles Saenz, James Kluesner, Charlie Geyer, Barbara Butler, Barry Bauguess (Baroque trumpet), and Bruce Dickey (cornetto).
