2016 Ohio ITG Conference

Muskingum University hosted the 2016 Ohio ITG Conference on Saturday, April 2. Guest artists for the event were Matthew Ernst, Principal Trumpet, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and Patrick Harbison, jazz studies faculty at Indiana University.

Approximately 75 trumpet players, including high school and college students, professional performers, and community members came to the event.

Matthew Ernst gave two sessions. The first focused on orchestral auditions. He discussed his approach to the audition and offered tips to the students in attendance. He concluded the session by coaching three students on orchestral excerpts. His second session started with a performance of the Brandt Concertpiece No. 1. He then discussed his approach to warm-up, practicing, and fundamental development. He had all participants play some during this session.

Patrick Harbison also offered two sessions. The first was titled Jazz Improv 101, a session in which he discussed the fundamentals of jazz improvisation. He concluded the event with an hour-long performance of some jazz standards with a combo he brought from Indiana University.

Trumpet ensembles from Wright State University, Ohio University, and the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music performed in the Festival of Trumpets. Royalton Music Center, from North Royalton, Ohio was on hand to exhibit 25-30 trumpets. Pickett Brass, from Lexington, Kentucky could not be there but contributed financially to the event. Conference host David Turrill thanks everyone for coming out!
