IUP/ITG Affiliate Chapter News

The IUP / ITG Affiliate Chapter hosted TrumpetFest 2016 on February 18-21 on the campus of Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Featured were IUP students, faculty, and a guest artist in a series of recitals held throughout the weekend.

The Department of Music at IUP has over 300 students, most of whom are undergraduate music education majors. The Trumpet Studio has 20 students at present and is taught by Dr. Kevin Eisensmith.

Junior and senior trumpet majors present recitals throughout the school year, but many choose to perform during the TrumpetFest weekend. Among those presenting recitals this weekend were junior music education majors Emily Brown from Clymer, PA, Ryan Gross, from Cabot, PA, Michael Helwig, from Conestoga, PA, Roxanne Person from Lansford, PA, and senior music education major Richard Williams from Sigel, PA.

Dr. Eisensmith presented a recital on Friday evening. Among the works performed were Joseph Turrin’s Escapade and Call to Glory by Kenneth Baird. Trombone professor Dr. Christian Dickinson, joined Eisensmith on Eric Ewazen’s An Elizabethan Songbook.

The featured artist for the weekend was Dr. Joseph Nibley. Nibley currently performs as principal trumpet with the Albany (GA) Symphony Orchestra, as third trumpet with the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra, and is an active freelancer in the Florida panhandle area. Additionally, Nibley has served as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Trumpet at the University of South Alabama while Dr. Peter Wood was on sabbatical and still performs with the USA faculty brass quintet. New music is a strong passion for Nibley, and he has premiered a number of works by composers including Michael Daugherty, Bright Sheng, Benjamin Taylor, and James Stephenson. Nibley enjoys the collaborative process and has spent time in demonstrating, proofreading, and giving suggestions to these composers as well as others.

Nibley presented a clinic at 2:00 on Saturday, February 20 titled “How to Find Recital Music (After you’ve Played the Standards).” His recital that evening at 8:00 pm featured Kevin McKee’s Song for a Friend, Rhapsody by Erik Morales and a portion of James Stephenson’s Sonata No. 2, which was a result of collaboration between Stephenson and Nibley.

A “Trumpet Studio Recital” presented at 4:00 on Saturday featured 8 IUP freshman and sophomore trumpet majors in a group recital. Works performed included: Slavonic Fantasy by Höhne, Prelude and Ballade by Balay, Concerto Scherzo by Alexander Arutunian and Francis DeLong’s Sonata Francaise.
