In Memoriam: Johnny Cowell (1926–2018)

Canadian trumpeter Johnny Cowell passed away on January 22, 2018. He was 92.

Cowell was largely self-taught, joining the Toronto Symphony Band in 1941 at age 15. He served with the Royal Canadian Navy Band in Victoria, BC during World War II.


From 1952–1991 he performed with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. He was also known as a composer and arranger, and wrote more than 200 songs, of which nearly 150 have been recorded.
